Quad Pod

Disaster Shelter

About the Project

In this project I was strictly given only 99 hours to come up with a fully resolved solution. The aim of this project was to come up with a shelter design for a natural disaster of our choosing. I decided to create a shelter for flood disasters as one of the growing concerns worldwide is the increasing impact of global warming with flood disasters becoming more prominent as a direct result of this issue.

Other specifications for the project other than the tight turn around were that the design solution must be made from sustainable materials, must be buildable and usable by at least one or more adults and the final concept must be designed using Autodesk Fusion 360 software. As I had never used Fusion 360 software before I would say this was one of the most challenging elements of the project, however once I was familiar with the user interface I adapted well and was able to replicate my initial sketches in the new 3D cad software.

The final design solution consists of: a base of Hempcrete with thick bamboo support beams, fold out side panels which lock into position on each side of the pod and finally a waterproof cover made from Hemp fabric with a fastening toggle around the bottom edge for a water tight seal. The design can be fully flat-packed, assembles in 6 easy steps and is suitable for use by 4 adults.
